Guru
When I was 16 I read The Upanishads- Breath of the Eternal. The Upanishads are scriptures from ancient India. The last line of the book goes something like "if you devote yourself to these scriptures and your Guru as you do God" then your aspirations will be fruitful. At that time I could relate to these scriptures. They spoke to my heart. But the idea of a Guru, not so much. I really didn't know what one was except a teacher and there weren't any spiritual teachers around Pleasant Hill, California in 1968. I found my guru in 1997, or better said, he found me. I have learned that a Guru is much more than a teacher. In Tibetan Buddhism they talk about Guru's quite a bit. The lineage of Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa of the Kagyu Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is all about The Guru. I feel that without a Guru you have followed the road less traveled and easily became lost. I sure did.
The Sanskrit word 'Guru' is usually translated as 'Destroyer of Darkness' or something similar. Adi Da in His uniqueness describes Guru as 'Bringer of Light'. What Light? This is where we get abstract seeing as how this 'Light' can't be scientifically measured (at this time) nor perceived by our usual sense of sight, or sound, or touch but it can be somehow felt through intuition. We feel energies that we call spiritual. Christ supposedly said "I am the Light".
My take on it is the Light we are talking about is the most subtle, yet most powerful energy that we usually aren't aware of but is behind all of life's movements. Yet, we can feel the effects of this energy via those that we see as enlightened. We experience it as the mysterious cause of miraculous events. It is spoken in terms of seeing God's Hand in the happenings of our lives.... and working in mysterious ways.
A Guru has this Light in them. They radiate this Light. Another way of saying it is they transmit this Light of spiritual energy.
In many cultures in many lands through many times it has been observed that The Divine (some higher power described as Light) influences, intervenes or somehow reaches down to us, or across to us (from some wherever) for our benefit. It is given. The way we relate best is usually through human interaction. Therefore, we are given help in the way of a Guru. There are many words - Saints, Sages, Realizers, Shamans etc to label this phenomena.
Adi Da describes this as The Guru Function of the Divine.
There is something in Physics called Sympathetic Vibrations. If you strike a tuning fork in the key of ‘C’ and hold it close to a tuning fork in the key of ‘C’ which hasn’t been struck- The unstruck tuning fork with start to vibrate, emitting a note you can hear in the key of ‘C’. You may have noticed this occurring in a piano store. If you play a note on one piano, another piano across the room can be heard.
This phenomena can be seen in us in the form of charisma. A person with a lot of ‘charisma’ enters a room and you feel their energy. You also can see how others are affected by this energy. We’re all familiar with the physical, emotional, mental and psychic levels that we can experience affected by other’s ‘vibes’. We can also feel nature’s ‘vibe’. Libraries are full of Walden Ponds and most everyone feels it therapeutic to spend time in nature. Natural energy affects us. The theory is that nature is the struck tuning fork and when we enter that world, our natural energy systems go in synche.
Spiritually advanced beings emanate rarely felt immeasurable energies. Just to live in the company of such a one, to simply be in their sphere of energy excites our dormant subtle energies. These energies are beyond the conceptual mind, beyond “think-think”. Thinking cannot bring us to enlightenment. If it did there would be a lot of big brained enlightened men and women.
In my opinion Adi Da radiates the highest energy. When you connect with Him you'll notice feelings that you've never felt.
As humans we have the capacity to pull ourselves up just so far, though that bar is very high. We do have the potential on our own to lead happy lives. We have the potential to escape our mortal condition to higher states and awareness's. There are many teachings and techniques that can advance one toward this. The highest advancements are given by a guru. The highest of them all is given by the Satguru*. Our Sat Guru is Adi Da Samraj.
